2023 Project meeting (Phoenix)

Thrust 2 (adaptable businesses) – Thrust 1 (adaptable urban spaces) collaboration

The two thrusts are working closely during the winter and spring quarters of 2023, leveraging the 2-quarter long studio class led by Thrust 1 lead, Dr. Branden Born. This is a mixed research design, involving site planning (using U District as the case study area) by studio class students, personal interviews by Thrusts 2 and 1 students, a quantitative survey designed by Thrust 2 folks and distributed by Thrust 1 students, development of an optimization model using data from the survey to identify adaptive strategies by small businesses, and followed by interviews with businesses in the second round. In the second-round interviews, Thrust 1 studio class students will be armed with model results from Thrust 2 and interview business owners again for validation purposes. For example, if model suggests an adaptive strategy such as utilizing technologies or outdoor spaces, the Thrust 1 students take these suggestions and go to the business owners and ask them whether those model suggestions really make sense or not.
